PART TWOReading 每小題五分

Briefly, the greenhouse model of global warming goes as follows. The burning of fossil fuels injects carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere. These gases allow the high-energy solar rays to pass through and heat the earth, but trap the reflected, low-energy infrared radiation in the atmosphere. The result is ever-increasing temperatures, or global warming.

It is calculated that there has been a 25% rise in atmospheric of carbon dioxide since the beginning of the nineteenth century. The average temperature has correspondingly risen about half a degree Celsius. Most scientists agree that the correspondingly risen about half a degree Celsius. Most scientists agree that the greenhouse effect will raise average temperature by roughly threes Celsius by the year 2050. Such an increase temperature would melt parts of the polar ice caps, cause sea levels to rise, and inundate such places as the coastal towns in Florida and California in addition, the corn belt and the cotton belt in middle-latitude United States would turn into vast desert, whereas high-latitude areas such as Canada and Siberia would have the most pleasant climates.

There are skeptics to the greenhouse model of global warming. They point out that, first of all, the evidence for a warming trend is inconclusive at best. In fact, the cooling trend between 1940 and 1970 prompted many scientists to predict that a new ice age was coming. Furthermore, these critics point to the amazing heat-absorbing capacities of sea water as insurance against any sudden ruse in global temperature. Finally, the clouds may actually work toward lowering temperatures. As temperatures evaporation would form thicker clouds, thus cutting substantial amounts of sunlight form reaching the earth. This would serve to cool off the earth and thus counteract the warming caused by the greenhouse effects.

A.    describing disasters caused by the greenhouse effect

B.     explaining the relationship between the greenhouse effect and agriculture

A.    flooding of seaside towns

B.     desertification of certain parts of the U.S.

C.    melting of parts of polar ice caps
